MSP’s must secure wind turbine jobs

Renewable Devices, a leading wind turbine manufacturer, has taken the limelight today over concerns that the company will not go ahead with a Scottish manufacturing facility, resulting in the potential loss of hundreds of jobs and a substantial investment in the Scottish economy.

The problem, as it stands, is the inability of Scottish Enterprise and the investor, Insurance Australia Group (IAG), to reach a full commitment to the project without written assurance and guarantees from the other party.  A rather unfortunate catch twenty-two.  Fears have been raised that the factory may have to be sited in Germany instead.

Labour MSP Rhona Brankin said on the issue: “The firm is at the cutting edge of domestic wind turbine design and they already have orders to support 100 jobs with the potential for many hundreds more jobs to be created.”

“It would be a tragedy if these jobs went abroad because of a bureaucratic logjam.”

“There is massive untapped potential in the renewable energy sector and here we have an indigenous Scottish firm which is very well placed to take full advantage of the opportunities in this market.”

We implore Jim Mather, Scottish Enterprise and IAG to reach a solution before Scotland loses out on this beneficial opportunity.

We welcome your thoughts on this issue.
