Scottish Marine Energy Research Centre to receive £2.5m
In the news today, Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, has announced that Orkney’s marine energy testing facilities are to receive an additional £2.5million in funding.
The investment in the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is said to increase the facility’s research capabilities and help to reinforce Scotland’s positioning as a leader in marine renewable energy generation.
The world’s sole accredited testing facility for tidal and wave energy devices will receive the £2.5m from Scottish Enterprise (£400,000), Highlands and Islands Enterprise (£578,000) and Orkney Island Council (£187,000). The remainder will be supplied by the Scottish Government.
First Minister Alex Salmond said: “The European Marine Energy Centre builds on Scotland’s global reputation as an energy hub by positioning Scotland at the forefront of innovation, research and development in marine energy.
“This £2.5 million investment will ensure this world-leading facility continues to capitalise on Scotland’s rich natural resources, while assisting the global effort to halt climate change.”
Whilst this is undoubtedly good news; we hope that this investment will encourage entrepreneurs and inventors to further drive towards Scotland’s targets in renewable energy generation.

We have a vision that Scotland can be a global pioneer in the Cleantech and Renewable Energy industry.
A key way to support this is to build a community, a hub, where those with common interests and expertise can collaborate freely. Cleantech Scotland will be this hub.
